Steve Smith is the latest athlete to jump on the NFT bandwagon, after announcing his “debut collection” in partnership with Dan Carter’s studio ‘Glorious.’

While the specific details are yet to be revealed, it would seem the NFT collection consists of Smith photographed in black and white looking off in the distance, almost melancholic as if he’s remembering every tiny batting error he’s ever made.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, however, Glorious is currently selling a “founding membership” package for $2,500, leaving many fans unsure if the pictures are worth it.

The usual hoards of Indian followers have bombed the comments section of Smith’s announcement with emojis and praise, but many comments indicate a lack of support, including the top comment, “this ain’t it chief.”

NFT’s have become a dramatically polarising topic lately, with some swearing by it as the future of all mankind as we know it, and others relentlessly mocking those who show enthusiasm.

Smith has never pretended to be the trendy type, preferring quirks and oddities over charm and style, and leaving his batting to do the talking for him.

He has however proved himself a handy investor, cashing in early on the success of Koala mattresses, and helping him to a reported net worth of $31 million.

There’s no doubt in my mind that some dribbler out there would pay thousands of dollars for a picture of Smudge that could be printed off the internet, and I doubt Smith has time to peruse tech blogs and educate himself in between 24-hour shadow batting, guitar practice, and latte art.

Perhaps Smith really has stumbled upon the future of Cricket memorabilia, and may unintentionally collapse the mini-bat industry altogether.

If other players and nations were to follow suit, we could one day see Mark Howard and Isa Guha reading ads for NFT memorabilia, just as Bill Lawry and Tony Greig would for a framed replica of Shane Warne’s box, or whatever merch they were flogging that week.

While fans may be divided on his decision to enter the world of NFT’s, it’s doubtful that this will overshadow his batting excellence, and if a bit of extra cash to upgrade his Vaucluse mansion will help keep the runs flowing, then maybe I might even dabble in a bit of Steve Smith NFT’s.
