Should the Brisbane Brown Snakes be the 17th Team?

The race to become the newest franchise in the NRL is heating up, with bids coming in from New Zealand, Perth, Brisbane and Papua New Guinea. The newest of these bids comes in the form of the Brisbane Brown Snakes, a fan-driven initiative that looks to restore Queensland to its once great position in the annals of Rugby League.

While the Brisbane Firehawks look poised to grab the 17th spot in the competition, crosstown rivals the Brown Snakes are embarking on an unlikely campaign to change the minds of fans and administrators.

As a club spokesperson states, “We’re a town that prides ourselves on the majestic chocolate waters that captures our imaginations.” So what better way to recognise the continuing history of Brisbane’s natural landscape than to immortalise the hallowed waterway on a footy jersey.

Amassing the funds to create a Rugby League team won’t be easy, but the club have secured the support of RSL meat raffles across the state, as well as “more Aussie tacos to sell at Bunnings than you could sneeze at.” Most excitingly perhaps is the promised return of the match day footy double, a tradition which seems to have been forgotten much to the dismay of the punter and dribbler.

The ambitious team has already laid out their plans to sign their first group of players, targeting Nathan Brown, Dylan Brown and Jamayne Taunoa-Brown, as well as potential coach Nathan Brown. Additionally, the Brown Snake’s website lists a few Queenslanders that they will attempt to bring to the club, “Bradbury, the Irwins to Stefanovic or even the great Scott Minto, fingers crossed we will have a King Brown announcement soon.”

The club is already selling merchandise emblazoned with their motto “Back the Brown” as well as their major sponsor Bin Chicken Bitter. All they need now is support from the fans and nothing will stand in the way of the Brown Snakes becoming the 17th NRL team. So Punters and Dribblers, roll up your sleeves and help out where you can, and lets backdoor the Brown Snakes into the NRL.
